Kid's
Page

This web page was made by teachers
for teachers and their primary students.
Plants have many parts. Each part has a job.
Seeds
Seeds are all around you.
Seeds come from growing plants.
All seeds have baby plants inside them.
Seeds come in many sizes, shapes and
colors.
Seeds need water to grow.
Seeds need warmth to grow.
Seeds need food to grow.
Can you think of some seeds we eat?
Roots
Roots hold the plant in place.
Roots hold the plant in place.
Roots carry water and minerals from
the soil to the plant.
Can you think of some roots we eat?
Stems
Stems hold up the leaves and flowers.
Little tubes in the stems carry water
and food to the rest of the plant.
Can you think of some stems we eat?
Leaves
Leaves make food for plants.
Leaves contain chlorophyll.
Using light for energy the chlorophyll
combines air and water to make food for the plant.
Can you think of some leaves we
eat?
Flowers
Flowers produce the seed for the
plant.
A flower has four main parts.
-
Sepals
-
The leaves that cover and protect the
bud while it is growing. The sepals peel back when the flower blooms.
-
Petals
-
Petals are the brightly colored part
of the flower that attracts insects.
-
Pistil
-
The pistil is found in the center of
the flower. It is sticky and is the part of the flower that makes seeds.
-
Stamen
-
The stamen is grouped around the pistil.
They are taller than the pistil and are often yellow. They hold pollen.
Pollen is the powderlike dust that helps the flower make seeds.
Can you think of some flowers
that we eat?

Plants and their Life Cycle
Subject:Science/Telecommunications
Level:Gr. 1-2
Overview of Lesson:
A first grade classroom and a second
grade classroom will utilize telecommunications as a means of accessing
and exchanging data and information on the plant and seed life cycle. Each
class will plant and record observations of seed growth in a variety of
environments ie. terrarium. plastic bags, and planters. Data taken from
seed observations of the plastic bag environment will be shared and compiled
via ClarisWorks spreadsheet. Other means of compilation such as graphs,
quick pix and slide show will be explored. Students will search network
data bases to investigate the plant/seed life cycle topic. URL sights will
be shared between classrooms as they are discovered.
Goals - Telecommunications
-
be introduced to telecommunication
terminology ie. modem, internet, surfing, downloading, email, online, data
bases, and attachments
-
will experience sending and receiving
email
-
will explore the internet as a means
of accessing data
Goals - Plants
-
will be introduced to the life cycle
of plants
-
will develop an understanding of plant
parts and purposes (seeds, roots, stems, flowers and leaves)
-
will hypothesize reasons for successful/unsuccessful
plant growth using data gathered
-
will maintain a written and pictorial
journal of their observations
