MEDIA SERVICES NEWSLETTER
December 2001

It has been a busy year already. The
Media Center is in its new location and I feel that it is getting rather
organized. I know where just about everything should be and I'm beginning
to put items in their respective place.
The biggest goal is to get out to all of the
sites and attempt the following:
I would like to come out to your site for a 1-2 day visit to
meet with staff to assess their needs for Media Center resources and to
identify Media Resources that would benefit the entire district. (These
could stay at your site or be donated to the Media Center.) Here is how
I envision my visit.
1. Arrive at site in time for an after school staff meeting.
2. Meet with staff to:
•Review goals of Media Services and review
how to submit requests for materials to be added to the Media Center collection.
•Set up a plan for me to see what is available
in each site that could be identified for use by other staff in the district
and materials that could be stored in the district Media Center
3. Spend the next 1-2 days meeting with each staff member to:
•Discuss their needs for resources
•Locate/Identify materials that could
be stored in the district Media Center.
4. Create a database identifying materials that could be shared with
other sites or stored in the district Media Center.
5. I’ll be collecting ideas for the first round of Media Center
orders through January 31st. If you or your staff have suggestions for
videos, CD’s, or professional books that could be used by more than one
site for more than one trimester or year, mail or FAX me the ordering information
including where to order the items, the items requested, order numbers,
and cost. Or, simply send me the catalog with the items highlighted
and I’ll return it to you once I’ve put the order together.
Items that will be used by only class in one site (for example theme
items specific to your school) will not be purchased with Media Center
funds. Some ideas for items to request include videos that support the
science or social studies curricula, literature videos, or professional
or teacher resource/activity books. If you can’t find specific items but
have a topic or title in mind, let me know and I’ll try to find it.
The following is an update of activites this past fall.
Media Services Update
Moved into new area, and am continuing to organize space
Traveled to Manokotak to help prepare new library. They will have
a new Alaska Interest section in their library and the rest of the new
library is due late in January.
Traveled to Ekwok to talk with the principal about goals for the library
and reorganize the library collection
Traveled to Aleknagik to talk with the principal about goals for the library

Celebrate Book Bash
Many schools have been reading like mad. Big Al is in danger
of having to show up in drag at his school. We are planning a big
trip to see that one (with digital cameras so I can share the event).
I am getting ready to send out a stack of library books to those sites
that are participating as a prize for getting half way. Would love
to get feed back so we can make this an even better event.
I will
be talking more about READ ACROSS AMERICA in the next year. It is
officially celebrated/scheduled on DR. Seuss's birthday Friday March 1.
To check it out got to http://www.nea.org/readacross/
District On Line Services
All district on line resources are now available
Returning Media Materials
I’ll be FAXing lists of checked out materials to individuals in the
next few weeks. Please return what you are finished with....and that's
all I have to say about that.
Plans for Next Year
Plan to travel to Twin Hills January 14 and 15
Plant to travel to Koliganek January 24,and 25
Plan to travel to New Stuyahok January 28 and 29
Need to get to Clark's and Portage
Would love to get around to all of the schools twice, BUT...want
to get resources out to you even more.
Let me know which units, themes, topics, curricular
areas you plan to work on next year so I can purchase related multi-media
materials to support the activities in your classroom.
FOSS Kit Requests
As soon as you decide which FOSS or WINDOWS ON SCIENCE kits you’ll
need for next year, let me know so I can add your name to the list. Remember,
kits are distributed on a first to request, first to receive basis.
