Media Center Services 2001/2002

Mission Statement

The mission of the Southwest Region Schools Media Services program is to ensure that all students and staff in the district have access to and are effective, independent users of ideas and information that support the curriculum and personal, lifelong learning interests.

Goals

1. Create a technology-based information retrieval system with access to district-wide multi-media resources; district and state-wide online library catalogs; periodical databases; and other research tools.

2. Create a multi-media collection of educational materials that supports all areas of the district curriculum.

3. Offer instructional program for information literacy skills in which learners will demonstrate the ability to use technology to

  • Select, retrieve, review, evaluate, manipulate, and create information for an identified information need
  • Apply study, research, reference, and critical thinking skills to organize information

  • Objectives for 2001/02

    1. Assess student/staff information needs and order materials to meet those needs.
    In addition focus on:

    • Science and social studies support materials (Coordinate with K)
    • Non-fiction books to supplement FOSS Science Kits (create tubs of books)
    •Author kits including books, videos, CD, activity books (Eric Carle, Tomie Depaola, Dr. Seuss, etc.)
    2. Implement the Alexandria catalog, circulation and booking system:
    •Catalog multi-media materials added to the Media Center collection
    •Provide training in the use of  Alexandria’s on-line service 


    3. Work closely with the Technology Staff to:

    • Implement the Technology Literacy Challenge Grant (see duties assigned to the Media Specialist.)
    • Train students/staff in the use of District Internet/On-line resources (Roger Taylor, Grolier, Anchorage Daily News, ArtToday.com)
    • Train students/staff in the use of the Statewide Databases including EBSCO and Electric Library
    • Update and add curriculum links to the Media Services Web pages
    4. Assist with the implementation of the Accelerated Reader program in all sites. 

    5. Coordinate the selection and distribution of RIF books.  Contact all site coordinators to review requirements for distributions.

    6. Maintain and distribute FOSS and WINDOWS ON SCIENCE kits. Inventory all kits at the end of the school and resupply. 

    7. Assist sites, upon request, with site library program needs. 

    8. Communicate, on a regular basis, with all staff via print and online newsletters and emails.

    9. Identify educational resources currently located at sites that could be added to the district Media Center collection.

    10. Travel to each site at least once during the school and meet with staff to promote Media Services.
