Quick Fixes To Help A Frozen Computer.

Your computer will freeze on you and when it does it is very frustrating particularly if you have not saved your work.
Save As... immediately and save often!
When you do freeze try these steps first before turning off the power to your machine.  (See Section -- How to Save)

•(First)  Wait a few minutes, some operations take a while to do and the computer may need some time.
Make sure that the mouse and keyboard have not come loose.

•(Second)  Press and hold the --- Key while you press the period key.  This will cancel the last action you took.  Try it several times.

•(Third)  Press -- , Option, and esc all at the same time.  (Apple  - Option - Escape)  This will conduct a force quit of any program you are currently working in.  A dialog box will appear asking if you want to quit.--If you want to continue working click on the Cancel button.  If you want to quit, click on the Quit button.   This is a “Force Quit.”  It will quit any program running and if you haven’t saved your work it will be lost.

    • Press and hold the  and Q (Apple - Q) This will quit any program you are currently working in.

•(Fourth)  If all else fails press -- option, , and the restart  key, all at the same time.  (Apple - Control - Reset)  This is called a soft boot.  It will     restart your computer.  You will lose everything you have not saved, but at this point you have no choice.

     • (Fifth) If that really fails--(Ahhh)-- turn your computer off completely by using the shut off switch in the back of your computer.  Wait a few minutes and then flip the switch back on and restart your machine.

AFTER A BIG CRASH REBUILD YOUR DESKTOP---improper shut downs can mess up your machine.

    • To REBUILD A DESKTOP -- you must restart your machine and hold down the  and option key untill a screen appears asking you if you would like to rebuild your desktop.  Say ---  YES...

    General Computer Maintenance

    Make backup copies of  everything.

    *  Rebuild the desktop file:  The desktop file is an invisible file found on every disk.  It holds important information about files and programs on that disk.  When you add, change, and delete files it can cause problems.  You should rebuild your desktop at least once a month.

    • To REBUILD A DESKTOP -- you must turn on your machine and hold down the  and option key untill a screen appears asking you if you would like to rebuild your desktop.  Say ---  YES...

    • To REBUILD a Floppy disk file ---hold down the  and option key when you insert your disk.

    *  Avoid Disk Clutter :  The more files on your desktop the more likely you are to have trouble with your computer.  Try to save your work onto floppy disks instead of on the hard drive.  (Remember:  Make back up copies of everything.)
