Southwest Region School District's DIAL-3 screening procedure includes the following components:
•Selecting
the screening team
•Training the
screening team
•Planning for
the screening
•Screening
the children
•Reporting
the results
Selecting
the Screening Team
The screening team in each SWRSD
village is compromised of the Early Special Education Teacher, his/her
teaching aide, Head Start staff (if there is a Head Start in the village),
and the Parent as Teachers Parent Educator. The District's ECE Specialist
will also be part of the screening process in each village.
Training
the Screening Team
The Southwest Region School
District's Early Childhood Specialist will visit each site in January and
train the entire screening team. At that time each person on the
team will be assigned a station and will practice the assessment items
for that station. The Parent Educator will complete the parent questionnaire
with the parent(s).

Screening
the Children
The screening for each child
takes approximately 45 minutes per child, including the parent questionnaire.
The children go from one screening area to another. If all areas
are busy the child plays with play dough at the play table set up in the
middle of the screening room.
Reporting
the Results
Southwest Region School District's
Early Childhood Specialist will score the DIAL-3 assessments with the supplementary
DIAL-3
Assist (Automated System for Scoring and Interpreting Standardized Tests).
It
is a computer program that provides the user with an efficient procedure
for accurately scoring and reporting the results of the DIAL-3 screening.
It enables the records of children's scores to be kept on file for future
reference or for research purposes. There is also a parent report
that is given to the parents when the results are discussed.
